105 First Thursday of Advent: Isaac
Genesis 22:13(NIV)
Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son
On the first Thursday of Advent, we remember Abraham and the offering of Isaac.
The ornament for today should represent the sacrifice of Isaac (usually a ram)
The story of Abraham and Isaac is found in the book of Genesis, specifically in Genesis 22. According to the story, God tested Abraham's faith by commanding him to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac, as a burnt offering on Mount Moriah.
Abraham, in obedience to God, prepared to carry out the sacrifice. However, just as Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, an angel of the Lord intervened and provided a ram caught in a thicket as a substitute sacrifice. God commended Abraham for his faith and provided a blessing, reaffirming His covenant with him.
From this story, we can learn several important lessons. Firstly, it teaches us about the nature of faith and obedience. Abraham's willingness to obey God, even in the face of sacrificing his own son, demonstrates his deep trust in God's wisdom and sovereignty. It reminds us of the importance of surrendering our will to God and trusting His plans, even when they are difficult or beyond our understanding.
Secondly, the story highlights the concept of substitutionary sacrifice. The ram caught in the thicket served as a substitute for Isaac, sparing his life. This foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who would later give His life as a substitute for humanity's sins. It reminds us of God's provision and the redemptive work of Jesus on the cross.
Additionally, the story emphasizes the faithfulness and trustworthiness of God. Abraham's trust in God's promises and character was rewarded through the provision of a substitute sacrifice. It reminds us that God is faithful to His promises and will provide for us in His perfect timing.
Furthermore, the story reminds us of the value of obedience and surrendering our desires to God. Abraham's willingness to obey God, even in a challenging situation, demonstrates his deep reverence for God's authority. It encourages us to submit our lives to God and trust His guidance.
Overall, the story of Abraham and Isaac teaches us about faith, obedience, substitutionary sacrifice, God's faithfulness, and the importance of surrendering our will to God. It encourages us to trust in God's plans, rely on His provision, and live a life of obedience and surrender.
